April 3, Welgevonden to Palapye, Botswana

My speed picked up quite a bit today, and the road and traffic conditions began to feel more familiar. I'm still having trouble passing, totally uncomfortable with the common practice of lane-splitting at high rates of speed in opposite directions to do so. I am getting by the slow pokes here and there, but with a major yikes factor.

Today we passed the Tropic of Capricorn, halfway between the equator and the South Pole. John had warned us that the sign was often down, and sure enough, only his quick eye spotted it on the ground in time for us to stop for a picture. We all held it up, while Rob and John snapped away.

Shortly thereafter, the border of Botswana greeted us, and I began my search for Mma Ramotswe, whose escapades have delighted me through many a quilting project thanks to Lisette Lecarre's excellent narration of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. I'm finding that Alexander McCall Smith nailed this lovely, warm, friendly country, and fear it will be hard to leave.
